Accidental Rave

Two weekends ago we accidentally attended a rave. I know, it doesn’t seem like that’s the kind of thing one could accidentally end up at. But, we did. We managed to do it. The story begins several weeks ago when we got a flier of current events from our realtor…

One of the events happening in Seattle was a youth circus show called Hotel. It was dirt cheap and sounded fun, so we arranged to go with three other people. We were a little surprised when we actually got down there though. The performance was in a side room on their practice gym… and it was full of kids and people that looked like parents. Then a large group of little kids (5-ish) came out for an act. At that point we five kid-less people were a little worried we’d stumbled into the piano recital equivalent of gymnastics.

Fortunately, we were wrong. The younger group had a little play about an evil villain trying to take over their gymnastics class. They worked together to defeat the villain. After that, the real show started. The main affair was the older performers. About 12-17 I think they said. The show was actually really fun. There was lots of cute acting and it was fun to see some really talented people refining their craft. It was a good atmosphere. A dropped juggle here or a second attempt at a trick there wasn’t any big deal. It was really quite fun. I’d recommend it to any Seattle folk.

You might be wondering where this rave comes into play. One of the people we were with had taken a bus down to the area where this performance was held and ended up walking past some kind of huge party on his way there. Upon hearing this, we all immediately decided that we should check it out. After the show, we headed toward the rave. Pretty soon we spotted it at the end of an ally. As we were walking down the ally though, a car stopped and rolled down the window. The very foreign sounding dude asked us if we were heading down there. We said “yeah”. He then asked us “Do you think it’s safe”? At first we were just like “Oh yeah, it’s fine…”, but that quickly became “Wait, why do you ask?” Ultimately he didn’t have a good reason beyond “it’s loud”, but that still weirded us out a bit.

And then we got down to the end of the ally. Yep, it was weird. There were several rave tents going, people walking around in costumes from fairies to The Doctor, and fire breathing dragon sculptures. So yeah, a rave. It was actually SeaCompression 2015, which is some kind of post-Burning Man art and music festival. It was pretty neat. We walked around a bit, then hit up a local bar for some drinks and a little dinner. After that we went our separate ways and returned home. All without being murdered or anything at the scary rave.
