Berlin

Like Will said, we have a ton of pictures and videos from our trip to Berlin.  We’ve been putting off the blogging, so I had better put down a bare bones outline of what we did so that we don’t forget it completely.

We got there on Thursday in the evening.  Jaci, Ben, and Mike were a bit tired, so we went to a grocery store to get some food and we cooked at our rented apartment.  We sat around a bit, had a few beers, then we went to bed.

On Friday, we went to the Holocaust Memorial and to Brandenburger Tor and to the Reichstag.  Unfortunately, you have to register a week in advance for a tour of the Reichstag due to terrorist threats.  We were a bit bummed.  We met up with someone I know in Berlin, Marlena, and went out for some Mexican food.  After that, we went to a little cafe for some cake.  I’d say it was a good birthday 😀

On Saturday, we went to a bunch of Museums.  We tried to see a show at the Winter Garten, but we couldn’t get seats together that night, so we got some tickets for Sunday.  The lady at the ticket booth was very nice.  We asked her if she could recommend a place to eat.  Unfortunately, the place she told us to go was too crowded, so we ended up eating at home again.  We had hamburgers.

On Sunday, we met Marlena for brunch at the Zuckerfee.  We went to CheckPoint Charlie.  After that, we were going to go to Legoland, but we decided it was too expensive. Then we went to the Communications Museum.  After that, we went to our variety show at the Winter Garten.  It was a good show.  After the show, Marlena went home for the night, and we went to a restaurant called Kaiser Kuchen.  I had Flammkuchen.  Will had a big burger.

On Monday, we went to the Fernsehturm.  After that, we went to the DDR Museum, and we got some CurryWurst.  Marlena came over after we got home and we ordered pizza and generally sat around.  Jaci, Ben, and Mike got all packed.

On Tuesday, they caught their Taxi to the airport.  Will and I checked out of the apartment and went to the Berlin Wall Memorial.  We met Marlena at her place, she fed us, and we watched a movie called KeinOhrHasen.  It’s German.

On Wednesday, we had KFC for lunch.  Then we went to a Ritter Sport place where there is a small exhibit about how they make Ritter Sport and you can choose the mix ins for your very own chocolate bar that they make in front of you.  And they also have the traditional varieties for sale.  After that, we went to the Stasi Museum.  The Stasi were the East German secret police.  We got to see a bunch of hidden camera devices and learn about how they would collect scent samples from suspected dissidents so that they could find them using dogs if necessary.  Then we took Marlena out for pizza and after that, we played Settlers of Catan.

On Thursday, we sent a bunch of our postcards (hopefully they arrive) and mostly sat around until it was time to go to the train station.

That’s mostly the bare bones.  Somewhere in there, we went souvenir shopping and ate a Döner Kebap.  I’m sure you’ll get a more detailed picture when we do a more thorough blog post.
