Linz Offenes Kulturhaus

Last Thursday (the 26th), we finally decided to head down to the Linz Offenes Kulturhaus (OK) to see what that was all about. We kept seeing these big wood walkways on top of this shopping center, and one of my students told me that you can go up there.  And they incorporate art pieces into the bridges on the roof.  It’s neat.

But you don’t go out onto the roof right away:

Water Room

That is a room full of ankle deep water.  That’s me on the other side of the room.  If you look up at the ceiling, you can see that the water reflects the light from the windows.  The floor is sealed with sheets of plastic and they have a filter.

Filter

Will was amused by the fire alarms in the room full of water.

The water room was one of our favorite parts, I think.

It was neat.

Now onto the bridges.

There were some neat views

And some art.  Like boats and junk.

And a moon lander.

The bridges lead to one of the church steeples.

Will didn’t look down.

Will wanted to know why there was a turnstile here.  We concluded it was so you couldn’t go backward.

Inside the church steeple, there was a wind machine.

There was a nice view of the cathedral.

And of the main street.

We had never see the top of a tram before.

I guess for every 1200 people who visit, they add a new solar panel.

There was a fountain with some shady places to sit.

There were these things for kids that they were supposed to go inside and there were little trivia questions and pictures in there.

This fountain was neat.  The different parts of it would shut off and on randomly.

That fountain was fun.

There was also an area full of mist.

There was a machine that blew bubbles using smoky air.  You can see the smoke left from where I popped a bubble.

There was also an exhibit about breath. I left them some of mine.

There was also this giant coil that was icy.  We didn’t get a picture of it, because we were hurried into the attic of the church for a tour.    Maybe we’ll go back some time later, since we can get in free with our culture cards.

That place looks really cool, like an art museum and a science museum mixed together.

I didn’t realize that Mary Jo had written this entry at first, so I was rather confused by the first picture! “Why is Will wearing a tank top? And how has he gotten smaller?”

What an interesting collection of stuff! Wonder if we could find someplace like that in the US. We were surprised that Will was not yelling “That’s scary, that’s scary!” all the way along the bridges. He is getting so brave!

Are you sure you were supposed to walk in the water? or didn’t they have any motion detecters.

Were those the cool bridges Will kept talking about when we were walking on the ground?

  • @kromeoc – The funny bit is that I started it (the first paragraph), then Joni took over.

@Eltern V. – If I *were*, and I stress *WERE* yelling “SCARY SCARY!” the whole time, then I was completely justified. I’m not saying I was and we just didn’t blog about it; this is a hypothetical.

@Dennis – Ha! We actually had a lady tell us we could walk in there. 😉 And yes, those were the bridges we pointed out. They were as awesome as we expected.

So did you go play with the big crane outside the Chineese Buffet?
