{"id":426,"date":"2010-12-09T12:00:24","date_gmt":"2010-12-09T17:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.maryjoandwill.com\/?p=426"},"modified":"2010-12-09T18:39:02","modified_gmt":"2010-12-09T23:39:02","slug":"krampus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.maryjoandwill.com\/?p=426","title":{"rendered":"Krampus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hey, so we went to the Christmas market in the main town square last night (Wednesday).\u00a0 It was St. Nicholas day on the 6th.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/willz.org\/hosted\/blog\/austria\/linz_tree.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/willz.org\/hosted\/blog\/austria\/linz_tree_small.JPG\" alt=\"Linz Tree\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Maybe you all already know about St. Nick Day.\u00a0 My family in Minnesota used to celebrate it.\u00a0 St. Nicholas would come to the house and leave a bag of goodies at one of the doors.\u00a0 We never saw him of course; he would usually just knock loudly and disappear before we got to the door.\u00a0 Correct me if I&#8217;m wrong, but are St. Nick and Santa Claus considered the same person?\u00a0 At least in the Midwest they are, I think.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, they also have a similar tradition in Austria.\u00a0 But St. Nick and Santa Claus are not the same person.\u00a0 St. Nick is a Turkish bishop who brings candy to the good children.\u00a0 That&#8217;s all I know about him.\u00a0 In Austria, there is also someone who comes to punish the bad children: Krampus.<\/p>\n<p><object style=\"height: 390px; width: 640px;\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/E8M9oD-1dwY?version=3\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed style=\"height: 390px; width: 640px;\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/E8M9oD-1dwY?version=3\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Their masks are made of wood and I think their suits are some kind of goat or sheep fur.\u00a0 I thought they even smelled a little bit.\u00a0 As you can see in the video, they are sometimes accompanied by witches.\u00a0 You can see a few more videos at Will&#8217;s Youtube channel: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/williamvoorhees\">williamvoorhees<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some of the masks can get pretty scary:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.maryjoandwill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/krampus.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-440\" title=\"krampus\" src=\"http:\/\/www.maryjoandwill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/krampus.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.maryjoandwill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/krampus.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.maryjoandwill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/krampus-300x278.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hey, so we went to the Christmas market in the main town square last night (Wednesday).\u00a0 It was St. Nicholas day on the 6th.
