{"id":58,"date":"2010-09-14T07:17:55","date_gmt":"2010-09-14T12:17:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.maryjoandwill.com\/?p=58"},"modified":"2010-09-14T07:18:23","modified_gmt":"2010-09-14T12:18:23","slug":"to-chicago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.maryjoandwill.com\/?p=58","title":{"rendered":"To Chicago"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The big trip began &lt;strong&gt;early&lt;\/strong&gt;.\u00a0 We got up at 5AM, and were out the door from my parent&#8217;s house at 6AM.\u00a0 We drove to Watkins to meet Mary Jo&#8217;s parents.\u00a0 We got there a mere 30 minutes late.\u00a0 Super fog and a school bus slowed us down quite a bit.<\/p>\n<p>From there we all carpooled into the cities.\u00a0 We stopped in Plymouth for some breakfast at Perkins.\u00a0 Well, &lt;em&gt;they&lt;\/em&gt; had breakfast.\u00a0 I had a salad.\u00a0 I know, weird, right?\u00a0 After we got done eating we hustled down to the airport.\u00a0 We got our bags checked in with United for the flight to Chicago.\u00a0 There was some question about how to get boarding passes for the second and third flights, since online check-in didn&#8217;t work.<\/p>\n<p>We talked to the United person and found out that we would need to get boarding passes from the second airline (Scandinavian) for the second leg.\u00a0 That was fine by us.\u00a0 We said goodbye to the parents and went through security.\u00a0 That was painless&#8230; at least as painless and something like that can be.\u00a0 We waved goodbye and went to our gate.<\/p>\n<p>We had one outstanding item that needed addressing: the cell phones.\u00a0 We needed to cancel service.\u00a0 Mary Jo called up AT&amp;T and asked to cancel the account.\u00a0 The customer service rep put her on hold to cancel the service.\u00a0 The next thing we knew she had lost the call.\u00a0 She tried calling back, but it wouldn&#8217;t go through.\u00a0 I checked my phone and found the following message: Sim card not provisioned.\u00a0 The service rep had indeed canceled the service, immediately terminating the call with Mary Jo.\u00a0 That was a little surprising.\u00a0 We expected it to quit at the end of the day or something.\u00a0 Whatever we thought.<\/p>\n<p>The flight to Chicago was fast and uneventful.\u00a0 It was about an hour and a half.\u00a0 Nothing very interesting about it.<\/p>\n<p>We got in to Chicago and tried to find the Scandinavian desk.\u00a0 We managed to get out of the terminal we arrived in, found the tram, and got ourselves over to the correct ticketing desk.\u00a0 This is where we hit a problem.\u00a0 When we got to the desk the rep said she couldn&#8217;t check us in because there was a problem with the ticket.\u00a0 She asked us to call the travel service (in this case American Express Travel) and have them re-issue the ticket.\u00a0 Well, interesting.\u00a0 The obvious problem here was that our cell phones were off.\u00a0 OH NOES!!!!<\/p>\n<p>Back in the old days, they had these things called \u201cpay phones\u201d.\u00a0 They are a wired phone attached to the wall in public places.\u00a0 Airports still have these.\u00a0 We went to one and called up the travel company.\u00a0 We sat on hold a bit, did some talking, and it ended up that the travel rep talked to someone with the airline that said the ticket was fine.\u00a0 OK&#8230;\u00a0 On the plus side, I made $2.25 on pay phone slots.<\/p>\n<p>We went back to the desk and talked to a different rep.\u00a0 The problem was that we were booked for economy plus, but were only charged for economy.\u00a0 A paltry difference of $1400.\u00a0 Well, we were fine with economy, so we just got tickets for that.\u00a0 Within minutes we were set.<\/p>\n<p>In our travels to the Scandinavian desk, we left the secure zone.\u00a0 This meant we had to go back through.\u00a0 There were three security lines and a business\/first class line.\u00a0 I somehow got moved over to the business and first class line.\u00a0 Not sure why.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t even really \u201cextra random screening\u201d.\u00a0 So, I don&#8217;t know.\u00a0 We got through and headed to the gate.<\/p>\n<p>The second leg of our travel would bring us from Chicago to Stockholm, Sweden.\u00a0 8 hours.\u00a0 Oy.\u00a0 That&#8217;s the next post.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The big trip began &lt;strong&gt;early&lt;\/strong&gt;.\u00a0 We got up at 5AM, and were out the door from my parent&#8217;s house at 6AM.\u00a0 We drove to Watkins to meet Mary Jo&#8217;s parents.\u00a0 We got there a mere 30 minutes late.\u00a0 Super fog and a school bus slowed us down quite a bit.
