Bergkäse

Welcome to the first installment of Cheeses. This category will be dedicated to the cheeses we encounter in Europe. This installment focuses on Aktion VLBG. Bergkäse that we found at the local super market.

Before we get to the cheese itself, I need to take a minute to discuss the naming of this segment. I wanted to call is “Cheesus”. But that was a little sacrilegious, so I decided to name is “Cheese-us”. I thought it was funny. Mary Jo vetoed me, so it’s just called “Cheese”. Any disapproval can be directed to her.

Back to the cheese. We’re not really sure what the name is supposed to mean. It roughly translates to “Active VLBG. Mountain Cheese”. Your guess is as good as ours. The mountain cheese comes wrapped in normal saran wrap. It is a specialty cheese, so it was in that 3 Euro range for a good size brick. We’ve been munching on it for two days and aren’t quite done with it.

The cheese is a hard cheese that is similar in appearance to pretty much every other white cheese you see. Nothing too interesting on the appearance front. The smell… well, the smell leaves something to be desired. Quite frankly, it smells like digustingness. If you can avoid smelling it though, you will get a nice tasting cheese. It’s a little sharp, but not so much as to be irritating or distracting. The overall taste is rather diminutive. It’s not over powering, but it definitely satisfies. Mary Jo says the texture isn’t crumbly, but is rather smooth. You could say it’s a mellow cheese.

On a related note, neither of us has a food description vocabulary, so these first entries might suck. We’ll try to do better.
