Life Update

Wow, it’s been a while. It’s been a looooong while. So what’s been happening with us? Well, back in the middle of June Joni moved out to Seattle with me. Since then we’ve been exploring the neighborhood we live in. We’ve been eating out at some of the restaurants around here and seeing the weird sights. Fremont is a very “unique” neighborhood. There are little statues everywhere. There’s a 15 foot statue of Lenin, a giant rocket ship strapped to the side of a building, life size dinosaurs made out of wire mesh and creeping vines, a group of statues that look like people waiting at a bus stop that regularly gets dressed up in different clothing by the residents of the neighborhood, and then there’s the Fremont Troll.

The Fremont Troll is a statute of a troll under the George Washington Memorial bridge. That was all I really knew about it before we walked up there to see it. I was not expecting this:

Fremont Troll

Yeah. That’s an actual VW bug in its hand. I was expecting some little metal statue that was maybe as tall as me. Apparently they don’t go for “reasonable” or “sane” in this neighborhood… and I LOVE IT! Beyond the weird statues, there’s also the Sunday Fremont market that’s a little Farmer’s market they have every single Sunday. We went to that last weekend. It was a good time. Fremont is also home to Theo Chocolate factory, so everything smells like chocolate. And don’t even get me started on the fact that people around here call themselves “Fremonsters”.

Aside from exploring the neighborhood, Joni has been running around doing errands while I’ve been ridiculously busy at work. We had an explosion of people contacting us. It’s already well past the point where the number of contacts coming in on a single day can be addressed in a single day, so I’ve got a growing backlog of work. It’s not fun.

The movers are on the way with our stuff. The delivery window they gave us was June 22 to July 3rd, but they’re going to miss the window and not deliver until this Friday, July 6th. That’s OK though. They pay us for the extra days, so Joni’s desire to have our stuff right now is somewhat tempered.

We also decided to start a small garden. We went to Home Depot and got some planters, a pea plant, an orange mint plant, a tomato plant, and a yellow pepper plant. We put them on the balcony and they appear to be doing OK. The peas are taking off now that we gave them some sticks to climb up. The mint plant is also really growing. The tomato is OK, but the pepper plant looks a little sickly. We’ll see. Oh, we also got some flowers.

I think that’s all I really have to update. Things are going well in general. We love the neighborhood and have been exploring it almost every day. We still need to take the chocolate factory tour though. I’m not sure what I’m going to do about work. We’re going into support mode, so everyone is slated to be working on contacts with me, but there are a lot of little fires we’re also trying to put out. It’s just really busy right now. I’ve been working in the evenings too a little, which I’m not very happy about, but there’s just too much to work on right now. Hopefully things settle down.

Today we’re going to go down to Gasworks Park (yeah, weird name) to partake in some July 4th festivities. There are fireworks tonight over Lake Union, but I’m not sure if we’ll stick around for those or not.
