Fourth of July

The Fourth of July must be blogged!  For some reason, I thought we had already blogged about this, so it’s going up pretty late.  Anyway, so our plan was to go to Gasworks Park for the Fremont Family Fourth of July.  There was supposed to be live music and food and such, and it was the place to be to see the fireworks later.  We walked along the canal for a while and took some pictures of boats.  (Click to embiggen.)

We also saw the Fremont Bridge raised to let the taller boats through.

Some boats were not so speedy. Notice they’re towing an inner tube with a cooler.  At least they don’t have to worry about making a wake?

So we got to the park and there was a gigantic line down the block to get in.  We thought it was free, so we were wondering why there would be a line to get in.  Since things looked so busy and Will doesn’t like crowds, we decided to go to the store and get some food to make at home instead.  Later I decided the line to get in was probably because of security screening.

So we made the terrible decision to walk uphill for a while to get to the food place.  We got stuff to grill kabobs on our tiny patio.  Our street is a gigantic hill and on a clear day you can see Mt. Rainier from the top.

Rainier is an active volcano covered with glaciers 54 miles from Seattle. It’s tall; you can see the clouds to the left.  Incidentally, its Wikipedia page is an interesting read.  We also saw some unusual topiary on our way home.

So we had our food at home and then went back down to the canal to see if we could find a good spot to watch the fireworks.  Some other people had the same idea.

The weather was really nice.  We watched the boats while we were waiting.

Also the moon.

And fireworks

The fireworks were set to music that you could hear if you watched from Gasworks Park or if you tuned in on a radio.  Initially, I was kind of bummed because we didn’t have radio, but luckily someone near us had one, so we got to hear the music.

After the fireworks, we went home.  A lot of people who were near us either parked in Fremont or live in Fremont, because we ended up walking back in a bit of a herd.  Then we went to bed.

People were right. Seattle is really pretty. When I get back to America we are definitely going to have to try to plan a visit.
