Gym

We went to the gym today.  It was nice and it put me in a good mood.  Since my schedule isn’t very hectic, I can see us spending a lot of time there.  I have a goal of being able to do a pull-up.   If I do get strong enough to do a one, I wonder how much it will change the appearance of my arms.  I don’t want to have man arms.  We’ll see how it goes; maybe I’ll never be able to do it no matter how much I work out.

In other news, I’ve been looking at English idioms and phrases to present to my students.  English-speakers seem to have something against the Dutch:

Dutch auction
If something is sold by setting a price, then reducing it until someone buys it, it is sold in a Dutch auction. It can also mean that something is changed until it is accepted by everyone.
Dutch courage
Dutch courage is the reckless bravery caused by drinking too much.
Dutch treat
If something like a meal is a Dutch treat, then each person pays their own share of the bill.
Dutch uncle
A Dutch uncle is a person who gives unwelcome advice.
Dutch wife
A Dutch wife is a long pillow or a hot water bottle.

Glad you enjoyed the gym. I don’t think you can get “man arms” because women’s arm muscles are just different in size/structure than a man’s. You would have to take steroids.
Also, a pull-up is an odd thing. Some skinny light-weight people still are not able to pull their bodies up. On the other hand, some very large persons can do pull-ups just fine. I do not know the why of it but think it has something to do with total body weight distribution instead of just arm strength. Anyway, we all look forward to the pull-up performance video!

  • the pull up video. Well all right!
