German Dictionary

Back when we were planning our trip over here, I tried to find an English to German dictionary for the Nook. I had little luck. There are very few free dictionaries to begin with that you can download. There are sites like Leo that you can use if you have an internet connection, but if you want something totally offline that you can use on an eBook reader, there are virtually no options. It was annoying.

I did manage to pull something together by scraping a website and turning it into an eBook, but the resulting document is huge and takes forever to search. If you have 5 minute to figure out a word it’s usable, but in any kind of conversation the other party would quickly lose interest.

In the spirit of having information freely available to all, I’ve started a small side project. This project aims to take all the German I know and cram it into some sort of usable interface. Pretty broad goal, huh? Right now I’m just entering data. I’m hoping to throw it in a database or wiki at some point (crowdsource the whole thing, if you will) and then worry about presenting it in a reasonable way. It’s very much a work in progress and has just started, so there’s not much in it. If you want to see what we’ve got and keep track of it, you can check it out here:
