Gretchen in Salzburg

We went to Salzburg on Saturday to meet our good friend Gretchen and her boyfriend. She’s an au pair in Munich right now, so Salzburg is a good midway point. Plus, Salzburg is neat.

Salzburg

It’s only about a three hour train ride from Munich to Linz.  It’s a bit strange that Gretchen is so nearby.  We met her when we all lived in Middlebrook Hall freshmen year of college and she came to the wedding, too.

In Salzburg, we went to a science museum that was really neat.  They had some physics experiments that you could play with, and tons of stuffed animals and fossils.  There was stuff about space, stuff about the human body, and stuff about human sexuality and reproduction.  Quite European if you ask me.

We were starving when we got out of the museum, so we went to an Italian place.  Then we went to the center of town for a huge Christmas market.  It was pretty awesome.  There were a bunch of wooden toy stands and a lot of really nice Christmas ornaments.  Oh man, I’d love to decorate a whole house with things from that Christmas market.  We had some hot wine and checked out the cathedral.  It was crawling with tourists, so many people had lit candles in front of the altars.  All the little flames were very pretty, because the church was dark.  I kind of wanted to warm my hands on them, but I decided against it.

Then we wandered around the market a bit more.  After that, we headed for the train station so we could go back home.  We wanted to stay the night in Salzburg, but we couldn’t find any rooms before hand.  I can see why; the whole city was just full of people.  I suppose it was Saturday and the market is a big draw.

Anyway, we went to the train station to see when the next trains would be leaving.  Weirdly enough, our trains were going to be leaving at the exact same time.  We decided to go to Burger King to get a snack while we waited.  Then we went up to the platforms and went our separate ways.  It was a good day.
