The Home Stretch

The day we came home, we got up early to finalize the packing and clean up the room. Our train to Frankfurt was leaving at 7:50. We had a lot of luggage. I had our two regular sized backpacks, one on my back and one in the front, and I had our smallest rolly bag. Will had the big hiking backpack and the two bigger rolly things. I get nervous taking the train with so much luggage due to space limitations, but the train started in Munich and we got there early, so there was plenty of space for all of our burdens.

Our train ride was 3.5 hours. I napped most of the way and Will tells me he just sat in his seat while I napped leaned up against him. The train took us all the way to the airport, which was handy, but then we had to take a shuttle bus to the other terminal. I imagine every shuttle bus is crowded and every one has luggage, so we were all in the same boat (bus?).

Then we did the normal flight things, dump baggage, go through security, go to gate. This time going through security, Will sailed right through and I got the wand and some gentle patting. I also left a can of lentils with bacon in my backpack; I was thinking we might eat it before going through security. The guy I guess thought he needed to explain to me why I couldn’t bring it through. But really, we just forgot it. I told him so and that he should just take it, and then we were on our way.

Since Will sprung a few extra bucks for a class upgrade, we got to go to a VIP lounge. They have a bunch of free refreshments. We had some orange Fanta, a latte, and chips and peanuts. It wasn’t long until it was time to get on the plane.

Iceland Air is pretty decent. Like I said, Will got us a class upgrade, to economy comfort, so we got bigger seats and we got everything first, mostly boarding and food. On this plane they didn’t have working video screens, so instead they lent people a PSP which had some movies loaded onto it. A PSP is a bit like a Nintendo DS, but much higher quality. Will jokingly compared this to Ryanair where the floor might be missing, but you could rent something to rest your feet on for 5 dollars plus a 50 dollar extra fee. Anyway, I watched The A-team, which is a really silly movie.

Oh and the flight took off one and a half hours late. Our planned layover in Iceland was one hour. So, we had pretty much resigned ourselves to missing the connection and even if we made the connection, surely our luggage would never make it onto the next plane. Not only that, but when we landed in Iceland, we had to wait a bit longer because an ambulance crew had to come on to fetch someone out of there. I was just glad we weren’t having as bad a day as that guy.

Because miraculously, we did catch our next flight; I guess it was delayed too. We went straight to the gate and got right on. It was kind of nice actually that we didn’t have to wait at the airport at all.

So we got settled in our giant seats. We mostly watched movies, Black Swan and The King’s Speech. Black Swan was weird. The King’s Speech was good. Will really liked it. We also had some food. I’m not sure why people complain about airline food. I don’t think it’s so bad. But I also liked school lunches. Anyway, we also flew over Greenland. The part we saw was all rocks and snow.

So we landed and got off the plane. Passport control and customs were a breeze. On the customs card, I had checked that we were bringing in food, so the agent asked what kind of food. With a little chuckle, I said we had chocolate and gummy bears, and that was the end of that.

And amazingly, our luggage made it too; they had big red tags on them that said priority. Well done, Icelandair.

We met the parents, who seemed happy to see us. We stopped to eat on the way home. The parents had carpooled together, so we went to my parents’ house first, where we picked up my mail and some things we had sent home with them when they visited in May. Then we went home with Will’s parents. I slept on the way leaned up against Will.

I may have to try the class upgrade someday. It always looks so nice. The first class seats on the flight that I took out of Dubai were amazing looking!
